LIP Central’s April meeting featured thirteen presentations on the theme of ‘The Street’, and two on personal projects.
Eve showed a collection all taken with slow shutter speeds within fifteen feet of each other, of Clink Street’s transient pedestrians oblivious to the photographer and the nearby street art. Her seated viewpoint captured that of a homeless person, wheelchair user or child. By contrast Emma’s image featured a couple visiting London and enjoying their leisurely drinks and friendly encounter.

Frankie presented two mini-series, the first capturing night-time street scenes during lockdown and highlighting some ubiquitous brands and also the warmth behind shop windows. The second series showed people enjoying sunny days on London streets. Prodeepta showed everyday situations on worldwide streets, with emphasis on interaction and closely-observed character studies.

Simon used blurred motion and overexposure to add character and interest to a newly-developed street near Battersea Power station. All were taken within twenty minutes. Chris began with an image of how a Battersea street once looked, and followed with surface details, rainy weather off Oxford Street and an eccentric approach to loading a car!

Anna introduced images from the streets of Somers Town, featuring long-term residents, interesting shadows and reflected architecture. Alec highlighted the features of Walthamstow High Street, including market stalls, street lamps, bikes and the new mall.
Austin showed busy routes and narrow thoroughfares in London, Edinburgh and Tokyo, along with street photography and street art. Nusse presented the streets of Hoxton, Haringey and the South Bank, and demonstrations in central London. Peter took us on a tour of his neighbourhood, from a foggy morning through to bright lights and deep shadows.

Robin’s images, mostly taken within two hours, highlighted diverse street features and activities, including recycling, parked bikes, a near-abstract phone box, tourists absorbed by their own mobile phones, and an antisocially-parked taxi. Jan stitched multiple images of blurred crowds and buses to create interesting effects on London streets.

The meeting was bookended by personal projects. Janet showed in-camera double images of daffodils, birds and trees. Edey presented calming reflections in the Hogsmill River and contrasted its modern appearance with its industrial past.
