I’m Com’un Home Elaine Constatntine      and    The Illuminations Andrew O’Hagan

The photobook that I brought features a selection of fashion photographer and film maker Elaine Constantine’s photographs of Northern Soul dancers and clubs, taken for a magazine assignment in the early 1990s. The cover title draws on Lou Pride’s record of the same name, which was popular in the all-nighters that remain central to the rare soul subculture. Elaine Constantine’s lively hi-key images can be found on Instagram @elaine_constantine with some information about and images from the book.

The novel that I spoke about was ’The Illuminations.’ by Andrew O Hagan (2015). The central character is facing old age and a declining ability to remember. She had, at an earlier stage in her life, been a photographer, with the potential to become one of the foremost documentarians of her time. It is a story told well and with great sensitivity. Although itt may not make the reader a better photographer, it may encourage awareness of the importance of capturing moments as life and time speed ever onwards.

I showed, basically, extracts of my recent domestic life: a bit of plumbing, car care, bird feeder, a birthday party, a group seen while walking the dog and an Ecudorian march in Bermondsey Street. Mundane photographs as memories and reminders and, in the case of plumbing getting an idea of how to tackle an awkward piece of DIY.
